Gibt es Grenzen, jenseits deren Landschaft nicht mehr Landschaft ist? Dies ist die Kernfrage der fröhlichen Spaziergangswissenschaft oder Promenadologie, die Lucius Burckhardt in dem Buch "Warum ist Landschaft schön?" stellt, in dem er sich der historisch-kritischen Aufarbeitung des Landschaftsbegriffs widmet.
Die Wahrnehmung und Funktion von Landschaft in Zeiten des sich wandelnden Verhältnisses von Stadt und Land ist auch Thema in den neuen Arbeiten von Lucia Kempkes. Der Titel „I Wish I Could Climb.“ will nichts verherrlichen, sondern den alltäglichen Konflikt des Menschen festhalten, der sich Zuhause vom Stress erholt, sich aber eigentlich als Abenteurer, z.B. am Berghang erfahren möchte. Er strebt nach Grenzerfahrung.
Der Zusatz Prologue verweist auf den aktuellen Zwischenstand einer größeren Werkserie, welche gerade im Entstehen ist und mit dem sie dieses Thema in ihrer neuen Arbeit, die bei M + R Fricke erstmals zu sehen ist, einleitet. Kempkes untersucht in Prologue Home, wie wir uns heute zur Landschaft positionieren, welche Träume und welches Verlangen wir auf Natur projizieren. Ob wir klettern, wandern oder einfach nur spazieren gehen, spielt dabei keine Rolle. Die Veränderungen in der (Stadt)-Landschaft verdeutlichen vor allem, dass Landschaft ein „gesellschaftliches Konstrukt ist, das Menschen zur Wahrnehmung benötigen“ (Cord Riechelmann).
Die Verwendung textiler Materialien dieser neuen Werkgruppe ist für Kempkes ein Schritt in eine neue Dimension der Zeichnung anhand derer sie die aktuelle Bedeutung und Idealisierung von natürlicher Landschaft und ihre Relevanz für eine gesellschaftliche Selbstdarstellung und - wahrnehmung darstellt. Der Teppich steht in den neuen Arbeiten von Lucia Kempkes symbolisch für einen Ort, der in den meisten Kulturen Wohlbehagen und das Zu Hause markiert. Gleichzeitig dient er der Künstlerin als Transportmittel in eine ideelle Landschaftsdarstellung, unabhängig davon, ob wir uns in ihr befinden oder diese durch ein Konstrukt digitaler Informationen konsumierbar machen.

Are there boundaries beyond which landscape is no longer landscape? This is the key question behind the cheerful ‘strollogy,’ or ‘promenadology,’ posed by Lucius Burckhardt in his book Why Is Landscape Beautiful?, which reappraises the notion of landscape from a critical, historic perspective.
The perception and function of landscape in times of a changing relationship between city and countryside is also the focus of Lucia Kempkes’s new works. The title I Wish I Could Climb. does not intend to glorify anything but rather to capture man’s quotidian conflict: stress recovery at home accompanied by a yearning to experience adventure, for example, on a mountainside; it is our endeavors to push our limits.
The addition of Prologue to the title refers to the preliminary results of a larger series of works currently in the making and introduces this new theme in her work, on view for the first time at M + R Fricke. In Prologue Home, Kempkes explores how we position ourselves today with regard to landscape, what dreams and desires we project onto nature. It does not matter whether we climb, hike, or simply take a walk. The changes in the (urban) landscape make clear that landscape is a “social construct that people require for perception” (Cord Riechelmann).
Kempkes’s use of textiles in this work is a step into a new dimension of drawing that illustrates the current meaning and idealization of natural landscapes, and their relevance to the expression and perception of the self within society. The rug symbolizes here, as in most cultures, a place of well-being and of home. At the same time, it serves the artist as a means of conveyance to an ideal depiction of landscape, regardless of whether we are present in it or preparing it for easy consumption in a digital construct of information.
