herman de vries - A Scottish diary, 1986.
herman de vries (*1931), der 2015 die Niederlande mit einer viel beachteten Einzelausstellung auf der Biennale von Venedig vertreten hat, ist bekannt für seine poetisch-radikale Auseinandersetzung mit der Natur. Das vorliegende Journal "A scottish diary" ist eine sehr typische frühe Arbeit (die erste dieser Art entstand 1985), die Fundstücke aus schottischen Landschaften enthält. Gepresst und getrocknet sind sie auf das Blatt montiert mit Fundort und -datum versehen. Die Fotos in dieser Sammlung sind ausnahmslos Aufnahmen aus der Natur, die mit den Erdproben aus fein zerstossener Erde dieses „Tagebuch“ vollkommen machen.

In seinem zeichnerischen Werk hat Simon Lewis (* 1965 Norwich, GB) im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre eine Werkserie geschaffen, in der immer wieder sehr reflektiert Versuche unternommen werden, eine Einheit aus Bild und Text zu konstruieren. Aus einer grafischen Traditionslinie heraus, zu der Werke wie etwa die illustrierten Dichtungen eines William Blake oder die wissenschaftlichen Illustrationen eines Robert Hooke zählen, hat Lewis eine leise zurückgenommene, lakonische Bildwelt erschaffen, die ihm die Auseinandersetzung mit einem weiten Spektrum ganz unterschiedlicher Themen ermöglicht, wobei jedes dieser Themen ihm eine eigene, charakteristische Bildsprache abfordert.

herman de vries - A scottish diary, 1986.
The scottish diary, an important early work is a collection of 47 sheets with collages of plants, color photographs and samples of earth (earth rubbings). The lifelong artistic occupation of herman de vries (*1931) with nature is both poetical and radical. He has been counted among the most influential protagonists of Environmental Art since his show at the 2015 Venice Biennale. This diary is an early and major work with objects collected in Scotland (de vries created the first Scottish Diary in 1985).

Over the last number of years Simon Lewis (* 1965 Norwich, GB) has produced a series of works that have sought to carefully construct a unity between text and image. Consciously working within a graphic tradition whose broad lineage would include such works as the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, the illuminated books of William Blake and scientific illustrations from Robert Hooke and onwards, Lewis has pieced together an underplayed and laconic visual world that allows him to touch upon a wide variety of subjects without each of those subjects in turn demanding its own "signature language".
